Q6600 @ 3.85Ghz vs. E0 E8500 @ 4.5Ghz Performance Review
Author: Dean Nottis
Date: September 28, 2008

Introduction
Gamers have long known that speed rules. However, with quad core prices dropping and and the E0 stepping just launching it only brought more questions about which CPU gamers should be looking at. Is it really all about the speed? What about the extra cores? Extra cache? Hell even I preferred the Q6600 after using multiple C0 E8400s.

I have a non-stop need to tweak, overclock and push hardware. With a little care and patience (I have little) I manage to get some decent overclocked results with most the hardware I touch. Armed with my L745A Q6600 and Q822A E8500 (E0) I wanted to get to the bottom of this.

There are a couple of things to note. I didn’t use Vista and DX10 for obvious reasons. I hate seeing a 10% performance for no reason whatsoever. I’d run XP over Vista anyday, however I dual boot so Vista is never far away. It’s just not my main gaming OS, I prefer to pull every last frame out of my gaming rig. For the most part we’ve tested using the HOC Bench utilites bcause its easier to give a duplicatable result. Anyone can fire it up choose the default tests with different resolution and see how their system compares. I had run tests with Fraps as well but the results echoed the results with the HOC Bench so I decided to leave those results out.

Test Bed
CPU: Intel Q6600 L745A G0 3.825Ghz @ 1.44v
CPU: Intel E8500 Q822A E0 4.51Ghz @ 1.37v

Mobo: Asus P5K-E (P35) WiFi 1102 Bios, vdroop pencil modded
GPU: PNY 260 GTX 756 core /1566 shader /1242 memory
RAM: G.Skill PC2 DDR2-8800 4GB
PSU: Coolermaster UCP 1100 Watt PSU
OS: Windows XP SP3
Other: X-Mystique 5.1 Digital Dolby Sound Card, Acer X222WBD 22" LCD (1680x1050 max), Logitech Z-5500 Speakers, Logitech G9 Mouse, Saitek Eclipse Keyboard
H20 Cooled: Thermochill PA120.3 rad, D-Tek Fuzion w/ pro mount, D-Tek FuZion GFX 2, D5 pump, 120mm Yates

The most common resolution for gamers is 1680x1050. Sorry, but I don’t have a 24” and I would rather run Anti-Aliasing than a higher resolution anyways. Don’t expect to see any resolutions higher.
